On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Iḷisaġvik College came together with our Utuqqanaat (Elders) to honor the Survivors of the boarding school system, along with their families and communities.
We began by watching Rachel Naŋinaaq Edwardson’s documentary, History of the Iñupiat: Nipaa Ilitqusipta – The Voice of Our Spirit. We then gathered for Utuqqanaat Uqaluktuaqtut – Life Experiences of the Elders. Our Utuqqanaat shared their stories, experiences, and wisdom while we listened, reflected, and learned. Together, we took time to deepen our understanding of the lasting impacts of the boarding school system.
Through reflection, learning, and the knowledge they shared with us, we reaffirmed our commitment to truth, healing, and reconciliation. We carry their stories forward with honor and respect, and we stand together in strength for generations to come.
Quyanaqpak to Molly Kakianaaq Pederson, Edith Sirroun Nageak, Martha Ikayuaq Stackhouse, and Louisa Kakianaaq Riley for sharing their stories with such courage and generosity, to Naŋinaaq for her powerful work, and to everyone who joined us.

Tundra Times, Volume 27, 2 April 1990
Decades ago, Patsy Aamodt made history as the first Iñupiaq superintendent on the North Slope, and one of only two Alaska Native superintendents in the state at the time, when she was appointed to lead the North Slope Borough School District (NSBSD), following Dr. Shirley Holloway’s retirement.
Even then, her priority was clear: integrating local culture into the curriculum through culturally relevant materials and local resources in the classroom, a commitment that remains at the heart of the NSBSD’s mission to raise students who are empowered, culturally rooted, bilingual, healthy, critical, creative, and lifelong learners today.
That same lifelong dedication to our students and community is exactly why we were honored to welcome Patsy as our 2025 commencement speaker. In her address, she reminded our graduates and listening audience:
“You have to learn about our history. You have to learn why our leaders worked so hard and never gave up.”

Quyanaqpak, Patsy, for a legacy that continues to shape education on the North Slope.

Iḷisaġvik CollegeView organization ›Have you met Larry? Our wonderful Expeditor, Larry Roten was nominated by staff and faculty to recognize all the great work he has been doing at Iḷisaġvik College!
Here's a little more about Larry in this Q and A:
Q: What do you like most about living in Utqiaġvik?
A: I enjoy meeting new people. I enjoy the extreme cold considering I come from Texas where it's the extreme heat. I also love being near the water. And I love everybody I work with of course.
Q: What aspect of Iñupiaq culture resonates with you the most?
A: A lot of things, like being a Christian and being strong to my faith is important here. Also watching and learning of the harvest of the whale, because on a personal note, my father was a big deer hunter and he used and preserved every part of the deer and I see the same here with the whale.
Q: Do you have any hidden talents or unique hobbies? Share them with us!
A: I've been in the restaurant business all my life so when I head out of town, I go to different restaurants to try different foods, and because I'm good with the chefs sometimes I create a whole new dish with them. I also love growing plants.
Q: What is your favorite thing about working at Iḷisaġvik College?
A: I love the opportunity for personal growth, education, and learning about the culture and environment, and most importantly seeing everybody, and getting to know every single person. I take time to learn a little something about you. And that's the best part about my job honestly. I enjoy meeting people, interacting with others. If I can't do this, then I'd love to do recruitment for the College because it lets me interact with people and I have so many good things to say about the College and what we're doing.
Q: What are you most passionate about outside of work?
A: My wife and the life and family we're creating. ❤️
Q: What is something you've always wanted to learn how to do?
A: Gosh there's so many things! I want to further my education and take as many classes as I can at the College - like next year, I'm hoping to take classes to get my CDL.

Iḷisaġvik CollegeView organization ›We wear orange on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30th).
For many Alaska Native families, children were sent away from their homes to attend boarding schools. In many cases, they were separated from their families, language, culture, and traditional ways of life.
The effects of these policies did not end when the schools closed. The loss of language, cultural knowledge, and family connections continues to be felt by many families today.
In Utqiaġvik and throughout the North Slope, this day is an opportunity to remember those experiences, honor survivors, and recognize the strength of the people who preserved their culture despite those challenges.
On this day, communities are working to strengthen Iñupiaq language, cultural practices, traditional knowledge, and connections between generations. Through education, storytelling, and cultural revitalization, we continue the work of reclaiming what was lost and ensuring it is passed on to future generations.
-We remember
-We honor survivors
-We protect our culture
-We teach the truth
-We reclaim
"What was taken from one generation can be reclaimed by the next."
