SOCIAL WORK
CORNER
October 2026 - Bully Awareness Month
Be an Upstander
An upstander is someone who sees
bullying and takes safe, compassionate
action to reduce harm rather than
standing by in silence.
In-Person Upstander Actions
• Remove immediate bullies thrive on
reactions; do not laugh, watch, or crowd around.
Walk away or encourage others to leave with
you to take away the audience.
• Use direct phrases: Speak up calmly using firm
statements like "This is not right" or "This needs
to stop right now."
• Interrupt or redirect: Ask an open-ended
question like "What's up?" or make a lighthearted
distraction to break the tension and shift focus.
• Buddy up: Reach out to the person being
targeted. Walk with them, invite them to join
your group, or check in an them privately
afterward to let them know it is not their fault.
• Involve a trusted adult: If direct intervention feels
unsafe or tense, report the behavior
immediately to a teacher, counselor, or parent.
Online (Cyberbullying) Upstander Actions
• Do not engage or amplify: Never like, share,
comment on, or forward cruel posts,
screenshots, or videos.
• Post positive reinforcement: Leave a supportive
comment for the targeted person (e.g., "I'm
unfollowing this thread because it's hurtful. You
don't deserve this"), or send them a private
message of support.
• Save the evidence: Take screenshots of the
harmful posts, messages, or fake profiles before
they get deleted.
• Use platform reporting tools: Flag and report the
abusive content or accounts directly through
the social media app or website.
Talk to a resource: Share the saved evidence
with a school administrator, family member, or
cyberbullying helpline.
How Parents Can Start
the Conversation
• Ask open-ended questions: Instead of asking "Are you
being bullied?", try asking, "How are things at lunch or
on the bus?" or "Have you ever seen anyone get picked
on at school or online?"
• Define 'Upstander' together: Explain that being an
upstander doesn't mean picking a fight. It means
showing the person being targeted that they aren't
alone.
• Role-play safe scenarios: Practice simple, direct
phrases your child can use, such as, 'Hey, let's go sit
somewhere else,' or 'That's not cool, stop.'
• Establish digital boundaries: Discuss how online
actions have real-world impacts. Remind them that
liking or sharing a mean post makes them part of the
bullying, while reporting it helps stop it.
• Emphasize reporting vs. 'snitching': Teach your child
that 'snitching' is done to get someone in trouble, but
reporting or telling an adult is done to get someone
out of trouble or keep them safe.
