Coastal Villages Region FundThis year, Nick Souza is celebrating 20 years with Coastal Villages Region Fund – two decades of building relationships, taking on new roles and working to create greater impact across our 20 communities.
Since Nick joined CVRF on May 22, 2006, his work has taken him just about everywhere, from visiting our 20 member communities to overseeing fisheries in Western Alaska, working aboard fishing vessels and building relationships across Alaska and beyond.
Today, he leads CVRF as CEO, but after two decades, some of his most meaningful experiences still come from spending time in the region.
“Traveling to the villages has probably been one of the most unique things that I have done, from the very beginning to now. It’s always good to connect with people and hear from residents firsthand.”
Those connections have grown deeper over the years. Some of the people Nick first met through CVRF 20 years ago have become longtime friends, giving his work a personal connection to the region that has grown alongside his career.
Throughout his time at CVRF, Nick has watched the organization’s fishing operations grow alongside its work in Western Alaska, creating more capacity to invest in programs, infrastructure and opportunities across our 20 member communities.
As he looks ahead, Nick wants to build on those 20 years of experience by strengthening connections with our communities, growing programs and infrastructure, and creating more opportunities for residents to take ownership of the work we do together.
After 20 years, Nick describes his CVRF experience as exciting, hard work and fun, but above all, something he’s grateful for.
Congratulations on 20 years, Nick! Quyana for your commitment to CVRF, the relationships you’ve built throughout the region and the energy you continue to bring to your work in support of our communities.

Coastal Villages Region FundAs the summer colors are fading into the fall colors, we embrace the change of each season.
The fall season brings crisp air of autumn; it is also a time to continue to prepare for the winter months. Whether it is bird or moose hunting, fishing or red/black berry picking. The traditional foods that we harvest, and subsistence hunt keeps our family and friends fed throughout the winter months. Which has been a tradition for many generations.3
Coastal Villages Region FundDuring the Youth the Work (YTW) Program, the youths have the opportunity to work at their local stores. They learn how to operate the cash register, stock and dust items, and help pack the customers’ groceries and more. Working at their local stores gives the youth the opportunity to learn how to work in retail. Working in retail helps the youth participants gain skills such as communication, fast-paced environment, patience, time management, teamwork, problem solving and organizational skills.
We are committed to ensuring the youth have real life job experience starting at a young age. We believe it instills a determination for the youth not only for work but also for school and higher education as well.3111 share
Coastal Villages Region FundOur Mechanic/Welders (M/Ws) play an important role in our CVRF communities. They help residents repair and maintain vehicles and equipment such as boats, ATVs, snowmachines, heating stoves, trailers, and many other items people rely on.
Off-road vehicles are very important in our region because there are no roads connecting our communities. People rely on them for daily travel, work, hunting, fishing, camping, gathering, and visiting family and friends.245 shares
